In today's economic environment change is inevitable whether it is in the downsizing of DuPont or the closure of a small business in Smyrna. However, making the shift from a full-time gig with a regular paycheck to starting your own business oftentimes begins with a lot of passion.
Antionette Blake, mother of two sons who are both in college and wife of 27+ years understands that all too well. A 20-year employee in Corporate America with Big Blue (IBM) her dreams of retiring with a full pension and a gold watch was dashed in 2005 when she was laid off.
However, for the last 11 years, she has been a contract employee for IBM in Wayne, Pennsylvania and recently started her own small business, A.Blake Enterprises - Social Media Management and Consulting.
Inspired by other small business owners at a Women’s Business Center event her entrepreneurial spark was re-ignited. So at the age of 54, she decided it was time to turn her passion into a profit and become an Encore Entrepreneur.
According to the SBA the definition of an Encore Entrepreneur: A growing number of workers age 50-plus are turning interests, hobbies or skills into a small business. Whether you are interested in starting a small business right away or are intending to wait until after retirement, now is the time to explore the possibilities.
Antionette’s passion for blogging and social media began in 2011, first as a way to fill a void after the death of her grandmother who passed at the age of 98. She began writing and sharing deals found in and around the state of Delaware, then about events and activities in the state. Her love for writing was quickly recognized by Ronni Cohen, the Executive Director of The Delaware Financial Literacy Institute who asked if she would be interested in participating and providing media coverage for The Delaware Financial Literacy Institute events.
Thanks to the many loyal readers and followers who voted, DeDivahDeals was awarded the 2017 Best Blogger from North Delaware Happenings and the 2013 Best Blog Readers Choice from Delaware Today Magazine.
In 2015, Antionette’s hobby landed her a trip to Hollywood. She along with two other bloggers were chosen to become Brand Ambassadors for a major retail chain representing Depend products. This national ad campaign was published in several magazines, including in the May edition of Woman's Day, in newspaper coupon inserts and shown in an online commercial.
Antionette, who has 2 blogs, DelBlogger and Blogging with Blake, was also featured on an episode of Friday FIRST on WHYY promoted as the Delaware Boomer who Blogs. She also hosts a weekly Podcast, "Social Media Sunday with the Delaware Blogger" on Blog Talk Radio for AAU Global Production Media Group.
Antionette gives back to the community by volunteering her time conducting Social Media Workshops for The Women's Business Center (WBC), The Delaware Financial Literacy Institute (DFLI), Independent Resources Inc. and AARPDE. She was the Social Media panelist for the first B.O.S.S. Brunch Tour conducted by MsMadamMoney at Dover Downs.
